 BOARD OF THE PARISH OF GRANT, STATE OF LOUISIANA, TAKEN

AT A REGULAR MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2014.

 

The Parish School Board of the Parish of Grant, State of Louisiana, met in meeting in its regular meeting place, the Grant Parish School Board Office, Colfax, Louisiana, in Regular Session, Tuesday May 6, 2014 at 6:00 o’clock P.M.

 

            There were present Mr. A.J. “Tony” Lavespere, Mr. Buddy Pennison, Mr. A.D. Futrell, Mr. Randy Browning, Mr. Marvin DeLong, Mrs. Karen Layton and Mr. Terry Oliver.

 

             Mr. Eddie Baxley was absent

 

            Mrs. Sheila S. Jackson, Secretary-Treasurer was also present.

 

            The Parish School Board of the Parish of Grant, State of Louisiana, was duly convened by Honorable Marvin DeLong, Vice-President of the Grant Parish School Board, who then stated that the Grant Parish School Board was ready to transact any business which may come before the Board.

 

            Motion by Mr. Lavespere, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved the May 2014 revised agenda.

 

            Motion by Mr. Browning, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved the April 1, 2014 Regular Board Meeting Minutes.

 

            Ms. Danielle Cormier and Mr. Rodney Johnson, of the Grant Parish 4-H gave a brief overview of the past school year and discussed 4-H livestock and shooting sports.

 

            The following students were recognized as the Academic All State student/players from all three High Schools:

 

            Georgetown:

            Morgan Bruce – Cross Country, Basketball and Softball

            Allie Atwood – Cross Country and Basketball

            Tanner Maxwell – Basketball and Softball

             Zachary Lasyone – Cross Country, Basketball and Baseball   

 

Grant High:

            Mattison McCain - Golf

            Taylor Freeman – Track and basketball

            

Montgomery High:

            Logan Lambert – Football

            Morgan Williams – Basketball, Softball and Track

            Haley Lionberger - Softball

 

            The following students were recognized as State Literary Rally Winners:

Cody Chandler and Tristen Roussell  competed at the Louisiana State Science Fair March 24-25 in Baton Rouge.  Cody won 3rd place.

 

            The Transportation and Maintenance Committee had nothing to report.

           

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously approved revisions at Grant High School (District) in the amount of $4,000.00 for paint and wax for the summer.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved a revision for Colfax Elementary (District) in the amount of $62,821.00 for painting, driveway, and air conditioners.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved a revision for Georgetown High School (District) in the amount of $7,946.00 for carpet, repair doors and gym floor.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously approved a revision for Pollock Elementary (District) in the amount of $15,872.00 for concrete, concrete finishing, floors in white building and

 gym floor.

 

            Motion made by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved a revision for Verda Elementary (District) in the amount of $4000.00 for water valves.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved a revision for Montgomery High (Parish) in the amount of $15,739.00 for repairs from vandalism on stadium area, lawnmower repair, carpet and paint for the computer lab, and paint the office.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously approved a revision for Grant High (Parish) in the amount of $32,000.00 for a new intercom system, sewage line repair, and chiller repairs.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, for the Finance Committee, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved to advertize a portable building at Georgetown High to be given to the highest bidder.

 

            While discussing Grant Jr. High leaks, it was decided to ask the contractor, M.D. Descant Inc. to come to the next board meeting and seek possible damages.

 

            Montgomery High School should be completely completed by August before the schools reopen.

 

            Mrs. Carolyn Lincecum, of Sandra Caston’s Horace Mann Insurance, will present Mrs. Erin Melton with a $100.00 gift card, for perfect attendance for the month of March.  Mrs. Melton will receive her gift card at Montgomery High School.

 

            The Board was given a presentation by two companies, No Fault and RFS, concerning track surfaces.

 

            The Board received insurance quotes for Property Insurance, from Brown and Brown Insurance to be voted on at the June Board Meeting.

 

            The Superintendent let the Board know that the Federal Correctional Institution at Pollock, LA donated 175 computers to the Grant Parish Schools.  The School Board was very thankful.  This will help tremendously on the online testing next year.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved the Student Handbooks for Grant Jr. High for the 2014-2015 school year.

 

            The Board received for approval at the June 2014 meeting Grant Jr. High Faculty Handbooks.

 

            Motion by Mr. Browning seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved the Pupil Progression Amendment for the 2013-2014 school year.

 

            The Special Ed Game Day was a great success and the School Board would like to thank the following people for their generous donations:

 

Colfax Banking Company; Montgomery Pharmacy/Grant Family Pharmacy; Walker Wright – Grant Assessor; Jay Lemoine – Grant District Attorney; Steven McCain –Sheriff, Danny Willett – Judge; Colfax Reunion Nursing Home; Jena Choctaw Pines Casino; Karen Henderson – State Farm Insurance; Super One Foods in Pineville; and B.J.’s Pizza in Ball.

 

            The Board received for approval at the June 2014 Board Meeting the Student Handbook for South Grant Elementary for the 2014-2015 school year.

 

            The Board received for approval at the June 2014 Board Meeting the Teacher Handbook for South Grant Elementary.

 

            The Board received for approval at the June 2014 Board Meeting the Student Handbook for Pollock Elementary.

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mr. Pennison to accept Amendment #4 of IDEA Consolidated Grant.

            The Grant Parish School Board will levy the 2014 millage rates at the July 1, 2014 Board Meeting.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously approved granting permission for the Superintendent to sign the Engagement Letter to Rozier, Herrington & McKay as the Grant Parish School Board Certified Public Accountants.

 

            Motion by Mr. Pennison, seconded by Mr. Oliver and unanimously approved to keep Summitt as the Worker’s Comp provider from Brown & Brown Insurance.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved granting the Superintendent permission to disburse sales tax and millage supplemental checks on May 19th and 20th, 2014.

 

            Motion made by Mr. Browning, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously appointed the Chronicle as the official journal for July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.

 

            Motion by Mr. Browning, seconded by Mr. Pennison and unanimously approved changing the June 2014 Board Meeting from June 3, 2014 to June 10, 2014.

 

            The Board received for approval at the June 2014 Board Meeting “Regulations for the Evaluation and Assessment of School Personnel”.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved the “Know Me” material as a resource for high school counselors and administrators.

 

            The Superintendent gave copies to the Board with the graduation schedule.

 

            The Superintendent is scheduling a Board Member Training class for the middle of June 2014.

 

            The Superintendent presented the Board with a copy of the 2013-2014 Financial Assessment Results.  The Superintendent is very proud of the scores.

 

            The Superintendent gave each of the Board Members a copy of the program that was sent out on Grant Parish Game Day.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and all had a good time.

 

            Motion by Mr. Futrell, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting.
