 BOARD OF THE PARISH OF GRANT, STATE OF LOUISIANA, TAKEN

AT A REGULAR MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2009

 

                The Parish School Board of the Parish of Grant, State of Louisiana, met in its regular meeting place, the Grant Parish School Board Office, Colfax, Louisiana, in Regular Session, Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 6:00 o’clock P.M.

 

                There were present Mr. Craig McCain, Mr. Terry Oliver, Mr. Randy Browning, Mr. A.D. Futrell, Mr. A.J. “Tony” Lavespere, Mr. Marvin DeLong, Mr. Eddie Baxley, and Mrs. Karen Layton.      

                There were no absences.

 

                Mrs. Sheila S. Jackson, Secretary-Treasurer was also present.

 

                JROTC Cadet Ms. Jordan McManus led the Board and those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

                The Parish School Board of the Parish of Grant, State of Louisiana, was duly convened by Honorable A.D. Futrell, President of the Grant Parish School Board, who then stated that the Parish School Board was ready to transact any business which may come before the Board.

 

                Motion made by Mr. McCain, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved the revised agenda.

 

                Motion made by Mr. Browning, seconded by Mrs. Layton and unanimously approved the minutes for the August 27, 2009.  The September 2009 Board meeting was held on this day.

 

                Ms. Sandra Caston, representative for Horace Mann, presented Mr. Skip Lavespere with a $100.00 gift card for perfect attendance during the month of August, 2009. 

 

                The Superintendent presented Mr. Ben Lemoine with a plague for being the recipient of the Eagle Scout Badge.  Mr. Lemoine was recognized earlier in the week by Senator Gerald Long.

 

                Superintendent Jackson also recognized the Grant Parish AHEC Participants as follows: 

 

Grant High – Hillary Spikes, Jessica Jefferson, Allison Kirtland, Chase Ward and Zachary Preuett; Georgetown High – Shaye Traylor, Rachel Barber, and Jackie Norris;

Montgomery High – Samantha Jackson and William Slayter.

 

                Superintendent Jackson recognized Pollock Elementary for their exemplary “Honorable Mention” for the School Health Award for the 2009-2010 school year.

 

                The Transportation and Maintenance Committee decided to have a maintenance staffing meeting on October 7, 2009, at the Grant Parish School Board.

 

                Motion made by Mr. McCain, seconded by Mr. Browning and unanimously approved budget revision #2 for the FY 2008-2009 Enhancing Education Through Technology grant.

 

                Motion made by Mr. McCain, seconded by Mr. Browning and unanimously approved budget revision #3 for the fiscal year 2008-2009 Reap grant.

 

                Motion made by Mr. McCain, seconded by Mr. Browning and unanimously approved paying invoice #7762 in the amount of $141,505.35 to Alliance Design Group for services rendered.

 

                Motion concerning renting the old USDA building behind the Grant Parish School Board was tabled.

 

                The Superintendent commented that the call for bids had been amended from October 1, 2009 to October 15, 2009 to give the people bidding more time to get all of the information needed for their bids.  The bids will be opened October 15, 2009 at a special board meeting called at 5:00 p.m. As always, the Grant Parish School Board reserves the right to decline any and all bids if necessary.

 

                Motion made by Mr. DeLong, seconded by Mr. Lavespere and unanimously approved a resolution supporting Futrell Chevrolet in its bid to keep their dealership opened in Colfax.

 

                Motion made by Mr. Browning, seconded by Mr. Oliver and unanimously approved allowing the Superintendent to disperse the 2% supplement checks on 10-09-09.

 

                The Board members were given packets containing Revised Policy Alerts: GAMC, GAMIA, GBD, GBRA, JBE, JD, JDD, JDE, and JGCD to be voted on at the November board meeting.

 

                Motion made by Mr. Baxley, seconded by Mr. McCain and unanimously approved the Superintendent’s recommendation to accept the following resignations, transfers, employs, and correction of Melva King’s hire date.

Retirements:

None

 

Resignations:

1.  Angela Meade, Cafeteria Manager @ Georgetown High, effective 10-01-09

2.  Rose Arnold, Janitor II @ Grant High, effective 09-23-09

3.  Cimberly Slatten, 3 hour sweeper @ South Grant Elem., effective 09-15-09

 

Transfers: 

1.  Rhonda Landry – transfer from full time lunchroom technician to manager @ Georgetown High effective 10-01-09

2.  Jennifer Carter – transfer from full time lunchroom technician @ DPJH to full time lunchroom technician @ Georgetown High effective 09-24-09

3.  Sue Faircloth from 10 month sweeper, replacing Rose Arnold to Janitor II @ Grant High effective 09-24-09

 

Employ:

1.  Regina Kirtland, 2nd grade teacher @ Georgetown High for the 2009-2010 school year only, effective 09-21-09

2.  Reginald Felton, 3 hour 9 month sweeper @ South Grant Elem., replacing Cimberly Slatten eff. 10-02-09

3.  Joseph Parrott, 10 month sweeper, replacing Sue Faircloth @ Grant High, effective 10-01-09

 

Correction:

Melva King’s hire date from 08-10-09 to 08-24-09

               

                Superintendent Jackson commented that Christian Nesmith had succumbed to cancer on October 1, 2009. She had fought a long hard battle with Neuroblastoma since January 8, 2008. 

 

                The Superintendent notified the Board of the untimely death of one of the Grant Parish School Board employees, Mrs. Robin Dubois.  Mrs. Dubois died September 30, 2009.  Mrs. Dubois worked as a paraprofessional and a substitute for the School Board for several years.. 

 

                The Superintendent also remarked on two substitutes that were employed by the Grant Parish School Board, Ms. Barbara Fry and Mr. Louis Tyner.  Both Ms. Fry and Mr. Tyner were killed in an accident September 30, 2009.

 

                Superintendent Sheila Jackson and the Grant Parish School Board offered condolences to everyone involved and stated the families will be in everyone’s prayers.  

 

Motion made by Mrs. Layton, seconded by Mr. McCain and unanimously approved adjourning the meeting.
